In 2011, GSK launched a PhD Scholarship programme in the field of oncology / haematology to demonstrate our commitment to working in partnership with the academic community.
The aim of the GSK Oncology CASE PhD Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for academic collaboration and offer a first class training experience in an industrial environment within the settingof GSK Oncology R&D.
We are delighted to announce that we will be offering a further oncology scholarship this year to commence in October 2013.
PhD supervisors are invited to submit proposals in the following areas:
*. Cancer epigenetics
*. Tumour metabolism
*. Rational combination therapies
*. Unfolded protein response
*. Protein degradation pathways
*. Immunomodulatory therapies
*. Cancer cell surface antigens

The recipient of the 2011 award was Dr Melania Capasso from The Barts Cancer Institute in London for her research proposal on lymphoma treatment.

The GSK Oncology CASE studentship provided the perfect opportunity and this is the reason why I applied last year. I was also attracted by the straightforward applicationprocess… and the unique opportunity to discuss my project with eminent scientistson the panel was an added bonus.'

The completed form should then be submitted by email to phd.scholarship@gsk.com by 31 August 2012.
Proposals will be reviewed by GSK R&D in the first instance and subsequently evaluated by an independent panel of leading UK oncology experts.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to present their proposals to the panel on 29 November 2012 in London where the successful candidate will be selected.
The student fulfilling the PhD Scholarship will be a scientist and they will need to meet the studentship eligibility criteria set out by the UK Research Council. The scholarship will cover a PhD stipend and consumables. In addition it will provide the opportunity for the student to spend at least 3 months conducting their PhD at the GSK oncology research laboratories in Pennsylvania, USA.
